Origin
The Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital had its humble origin in 1925 in the school of Indian medicine, started at the behest of vaidhya Bhushan Dr.Srinivasa Moorthy, a doyen in the field of Indian traditional medicine.
Kilpauk Medical College is one of the premier medical institutions in India founded in 1960. The college has been instrumental in producing many of the leading medical specialists in South India.
The institution has grown from strength to strength with various stalwarts contributing to its development.
The Institute of Radiology has 2 Professors, 2 Associate Professors, 7 Assistant Professors, 4 Senior Residents, 4 Post Graduates seats in M.D. Radiology per year and 10 students of Diploma in Radio diagnostic Technology.
Presently the department is fully digitized with a PACS system integrating the orthopedic, pediatric, outpatient and emergency department x-ray machines to the main department, which houses 24 hours x-ray services as well as DR system.
Colour Doppler USG machines have been added to augment USG department which also provides bed side USG services through many mobile USG devices.
There are 18 mobile X-ray units in various intensive care units and 3 C-Arm X-ray machines to provide pre-operative services.
The Institute of Radiology is home to Educational forum known as KARE-KMC Academy of Radiology Education which was created in the year 2014 aimed at creating dynamic facilities for interdisciplinary learning culture.

In accordance with the recommendations of Usman committee, Chopra Committee and the Pandit Committee of Government of Madras and Government of India, the institution was upgraded into college of Indian medicine and started awarding degrees at GCIM.
The Department of Cardiology was started under the eminent cardiologist Prof.S.Thanigachalam.
The Integrated Medicine course M.B.B.S. Degree was started.
The college was renamed as Government Kilpauk Medical College which in the beginning was an exclusive women’s college.
The college became co-educational
The surgical block came into being
The ICU was started with 10 beds.
The Ambedkar Institute of Diabetology was started.
The department acquired its first ALOKA USG machine
The whole body CT scanner was added at Government Royapettah Hospital which is attached to this college.
GKMCH had its first CT scanner
Conventional and sono-mammography machines were inaugurated
The Department of Radiology was recognized as a post graduate institution by the National Board of Examination
1.5 Tesla GE MRI scanner was purchased
MR mammography coil was purchased
The department started MD course with the guidance and support of the Dean Prof. Dr.Ramakrishnan.
The department conducts an M.Sc in Radiography course
2018 June – Digital 3D mammography, tomosynthesis, contrast enhanced mammography with stereotactic biopsy
January 2019- Inauguration of K.M.C breast clinic
July 01,2022- Upgraded to INSTITUE OF RADIO-DIAGNOSIS
